If you have a dream to be a singer, you can make it happen! My name is Wendy and I am a talent manager in LA. I know how to help talented people just like you make their singing dreams a reality. I want to help you reach your highest ambitions too! Listen, I know what it feels like to have a dream to be on the radio, or to make cds and record in the studio. That dream began for me when I was just a kid. I made it happen for me and now as a talent manager I can make it happen for you too. Take my advice and I promise you will start making progress in your singing career.
The ideas I am going to discuss below can be done in ANY city you are in. Whether you are in a small rural town in Oklahoma, or a big city like Chicago, you can get started on your singing career today. Don't sit around and "hope" you get discovered. Get out there in your community and sing every where you can so people start to know you exist and hear your amazing voice. If you are talented get out there and show people what you can do. I want you to believe in yourself, and take chances, even if it is scary and even if you don't know what you are doing yet. Everyone has to start somewhere. There is a saying by the famous motivator Zig Ziegler," You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to become great." So get out there and start. NEVER undervalue who you are, and NEVER underestimate what you are capable of.
I am going to be your long distance "Talent Manager." The advice I am going to give you will walk you through the beginning steps you can take to move ahead on your goals. This advice is the exact same advice and direction I give my clients who live here in Los Angeles and are signed to my professional management company. If you want to be successful and competitive in this business, to make people take notice of you, I highly recommend you do the things I am suggesting below. Believe in yourself and go for it! You have something unique and wonderful to share and I want to help you. So, let's get started.
1. Number One. TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN. Take voice classes. Get yourself in local singing classes with the best teachers you can find in your area. Find teachers at music schools, colleges, or local voice teachers. Try a few out until you find someone you are comfortable with and see improvement with. Make sure you are practicing 2-3 hours a day and becoming as good as you can get. Be sure you learn to sing in key.
2. Pick 2-4 songs you know very well and start to perform them live everywhere you can. Churches, Schools, Fairs, Farmers Markets, Nursing Homes. You need the practice, practice, practice. So ask if you can sing. Sing at family events. Have a concert in your backyard and sing for your neighbors, family and friends. Sing live at least 5 times a month for 1 year to begin to perfect your act. If you aren't singing, you are not a singer.
3. Audition for local musical theater groups and get experience on stage and working professionally. Later, you may be ready to move to New York to audition for Broadway if that is your dream!
4. Your best friends in this industry are other singers and musicians. They always refer you to people they know who needs a singer. The more musicians you meet and sing with, or for, the more they will introduce you to opportunities. Sit in with other people - that means ask if you can get up on stage with them and sing a song with them. You can do that pretty often and people will be able to hear your talent. Bring someone along to video tape it so you can put it on You Tube.
5. Check out your local music scene and get involved. Every town, big or small, has singers and musicians playing somewhere. Find them. Go to shows, watch other people perform, see what arouses a crowd, how do they use the stage? Learn how to be a good performer and connect to an audience. All stars have good stage presence and know how to connect with an audience. Take a performance class if you can find one. Watch videos of your favorite singers, but turn the sound off and just watch their facial expressions, arm movements and body language.
6. Sing a song you really love to sing into a camera. Use a neutral or artistic background like a brick wall. (Don't use your cluttered kitchen as a background or your bathroom) Sing from your heart. Don't hold anything back. Make eye contact with the camera. Mean what you are singing about. Be expressive. Then post it on You Tube. You can also send the You Tube link to show people what you can do. If you need help making the tape, contact a film student at a local college and ask if they will film a demo video of you singing. Make sure it is well lit, and the sound is good.
7. If you can't afford to go in a studio and pay musicians to play the music, create a "Poor Man's Demo." Get some backing tracks at a music store or download them online and record yourself singing over them. Make sure the music doesn't drown you out. You can hand out copies of these songs to everyone you meet - use it as a demo to show people what you can do.
8. Sing at College Campuses. Call the events department at colleges and see if there is a local event you can sing at. Or find out how you can sing the National Anthem at one of their sports games. Always make sure someone video tapes your live performances so you can put them on You Tube later, if the sound and lighting is good.
9. Contact local booking agents and see if you can "open" for people performing in and around you. Make sure someone videotapes these performances and put them on You Tube.
10. Create a Website, Facebook or MySpace Page or other website with full bio info and music samples of you singing. Keep adding links to your new You Tube Videos as you make them. You need to be able to show people what you can do. Don't put a slide show of still pictures. People need to see how you move and your expressions.
11. Send press releases to local papers and let them know when and where you are singing. You need publicity. You want to become a BIG Fish in your small town before you try to move to LA or NY. Save the newspaper articles and any good reviews you get so you can quote them on your website and in your cover letters.
12. Contact reputable music managers and send your demo along with a very good picture of yourself and a link to your You Tube videos.
13. Sing on other people demos. There are song writers in your town who need singers to sing their songs. Call them and as if they have any songs you can sing on. Send them your demo or sing live for them right over the phone. Ask if you can use their song to show people how you sing.
14. Work and save your money so you can audition every chance you get. If you live near New York, LA, Chicago or any other big city, take the train in and go to auditions. Audition often so you get comfortable doing it.
15. Keep a Binder with contact phone numbers and emails of every musician/singer you meet or play with. Stay in touch with them. They often need a singer. Research local venues you can play and put the list in your binder. Call them ask try to get yourself booked there. Also put in your binder lyrics and charts of the songs you sing with keys so you can sing them anywhere at a moments notice. Any good piano player can help you figure out the keys to your songs.
16. FIGURE OUT WHO YOU ARE as a Singer. What kind of music do you sing? Do you sing with a band? R&B, jazz, country, blues, pop, dance? Do you perform alone, with guitar Player, Piano Player, Dance tracks? What is your act? Get the materials you need to perform live. If you need a guitarist or piano player find one to play with you. If you need backing tracks buy them in music stores of online. For original songs have the producers you work with give you backing tracks so you can sing live with them. There are so many ways to work as a Singer. You MUST to figure out what YOU want to do.
17. Contact local music producers in your area, meet them, write and record songs with them. See what you come up. If you are under 18, always bring a parent with you to meet people you don't know.
18. Learn the Piano or Guitar so you can accompany yourself anytime and anywhere you are.
19. Go into a local recording studio and record your own 4 -10 song CD. Sell it at your shows and all your local performances.
20. Ask other local artist/musicians what they are doing, where they are singing, do they have any advice or contacts for you? Read books about breaking into show business. Read autobiographies of singers who have made it. Read Wikipedia and see how your favorite singers have built their careers. Every path will be a little different but you can learn a lot from people who have already done it.
21. Audition for ALL local singing Contests. Audition for national singing contests including American Idol, America's Got Talent and The Voice. Go online to their websites and follow directions. You can audition in person or send in a tape.
