Hey college students! You want to be an actor so you enrolled in college and are taking acting classes or you are majoring in theater. You are probably thinking when you graduate college that's when you are going to start your acting career, right? But let me tell you something that will really help you- Professional acting is the kind of business that works better the younger you start. By the time you graduate college you will be 4 years older other actors will already have professional credits and those are the actors you will be competing with for the same roles.

So here is my very important advice for college students in or around Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Dallas

1) AUDITION FOR FILM AND TV WHILE YOU ARE IN COLLEGE
While you are studying in college, its is important that you are also auditioning for film and TV in NYC or LA at the same time - or the closest big city that has casting directors and auditions.

You need to start meeting casting directors as soon as possible so they start to get familiar with you and your work. Do NOT wait until you graduate. Get an agent, go on auditions and start doing some professional work in commercials, TV, film and theater DURING the years you are in college. I'll say it again, you do NOT want to wait until you graduate to start building those relationships. Start as soon as you can while you are young. Do BOTH school and audition at the same time.

2) TRAIN. TRAIN. TRAIN.
Even though you are taking acting in college, you need to take a professional acting classes to develop your cold reading and audition skills. Once these are strong you are ready to get your first agent and start audioning for casting directors.

3) ALWAYS BE ACTING

Do theater productions at college and in the community. Take acting classes in audition techniques, acting, scene study and on camera. Some of your classes will be at collegeand others at professional schools. There is no reason you can't take an acting class in the closet big city 1 or 2 days a month. You need this professional training and so does your resume.

4) SUBMIT YOURSELF FOR PROJECTS

Create an account on Backstage.com upload your picture and create a resume. You can submit yourself to all kinds of acting projects like webseries, student films, short films, and commercials. Do it. You need to get experience and you need the credits on your resume.

5) BUILD YOUR RESUME

You should be building your resume while you are in college by adding a new acting class to it every year, AND by adding acting jobs that you do in short films, commercials, webseries, theater productions, and small roles on TV show etc.The reason I tell you this is the older you are the harder it is in this business. By the time you graduate college in 4 years you want to have at least 2 or 3 TV co-star or guest star credits on your resume.

What is a Co Star Credit?
A co-star is usually one day of work on a TV show with 5 lines or under.

What is a Guest Star Credit?
A guest start is usually 3-5 days of work on a TV show.

6) GET INFORMED ABOUT HOW THE BUSINESS WORKS

When agents and managers are looking for new clients, we typically start with kids ages 7-19. They are easier to get auditions for. When you become an adult you will be comptering with actors who already have some TV credits. So YOU need to get some too! That makes agents fell more comfortable signing adults. So get some TV credits and build your resume while you are still in college.

Why do I have to keep getting New Headshots???

What!!! I need new headshots again?

Headshots are typically your first expense when starting your new acting business. They are part of the start up costs of your business. What every actor should understand about headshots is that you have to keep taking them until you find a picture that "pops" to casting directors and gets you called in for auditions. Sometimes an actor gets lucky and gets a picture that pops from their first session. Others may have to shoot 2, 3, 4 times with different photographers until that magical picture happens. It's all part of the start up cost of your acting business. No one knows why some pictures "pop" and some don't. No one can tell you why a photographer can create a picture that "pops" for one actor, but that same photographers pictures do not pop for another actor. It's truly a mystery.

But it is a fact. And the expense is real. Recently I had a client shoot with a fantastic photographer, who has a history of his pictures popping for actors, but no one in casting is responding to her shots. Her agent wants her to shoot again with a new photographer and try someone else. I have to call my client and explain this. The thing with actors is they just don't understand how that could happen. "The shots look great, what do you mean they don't pop?"

The only thing I can compare it to is advertising commercials, because it is very similar. An advertising team will come up with a concept, create a commercial story board, get the idea approved, cast it, shoot the commercial, air it and after all that money is spent the commercial may not "pop" to audiences and bring in a substantial amount of new or repeat business. Therefore, a brand new advertising campaign must be developed. Of course when the commercial is working, or it "pops" to audiences you may see that commercial 5-10 times a day until it runs out of steam. Then a new campaign must be shot and the whole process starts all over again.

Your headshots are your advertising. They are your billboard. They are subjective and there is no way to determine if the artwork is effective until you create it. If Actors are going to be serious about this business, there is no use complaining about headshots that don't work. It's just time to re-shoot and create a new campaign. (On a side note: When it comes to kids, their looks change so quickly parents have to get new headshots for kids twice every year!)

As a talent manager I am known for telling it like it is. No sugar coating. Sorry to burst your bubble! But if your headshots aren't working, it ain't personal. Just suck it up and re-shoot. It is part of the cost of doing business. Sometimes it amazes me how actors think that running their own acting company is going to be cheap. Newsflash, it isn't. It is actually costs about $8,000 a year with headshots, classes, workshops, etc. So be a smart entrepreneur and always save your money for the multitude of endless costs that come with running a business. Headshots, well I don't think any working actor is ever done shooting them. But, the cool thing is the more successful you become as an actor, then others start picking up the tab for your photo sessions! Waahoo, don't you just love that?

It amazes me how many actors have been in Hollywood for several years and still don't know the basics of breaking into television. I am going to break it down simpler than I ever have. Here are 5 steps you can take to get ahead of your competition and maybe even get your foot in the door!

7. When you have 8+ acting credits, (short films, student films, webisodes) go to agent showcases and try to get an agent. Show them how hard you work and how talented you are!

8. Create a List of 10 TV shows you are right for, where you see your type on it every week. Figure out the casting directors at IMDBPRO http://www.imdb.com Take their casting Director workshops 3-4 times a year - You can use
WORKSHOP GURU.com to find the workshops. Make sure you already have solid acting training, headshot, resume and reel. Even though it is a workshop, you have to do your best work. CD's remember great work and they remember bad work and will not call you in for auditions if they see bad work in a workshop.

9. Before every TV audition watch the show you are going in for to get the feel and tone of the show. Be sure to look up who casts it and be ready to answer a question like, "Who is your favorite character on my show?"  Be familiar with the shows you are auditioning for. It highly likely the actor who gets the job will be.

10. Stay in touch with every casting director you meet, director you work with and other actors you befriend along the way. People hire people they know, and people they like. Be likeable, professional and find ways to give to the relationships you are creating. Don't be a taker. Be a giver!

That sound easy right? Well that gives you the JIST of what you should be doing during the 1st TWO- THREE years, so at least you are right on track. This career takes a lot of work and thousands of dollars to get started. If you don't have OUTSTANDING headshots you won't get anywhere. Don't have them taken by a friend for free. It is your most important tool. If you aren't submitting yourself everyday on Actors Access (mostly theatrical breakdowns) and LA Casting (mostly commercial breakdowns) and auditioning you are not getting better at auditioning, meeting casting directors and directors, and you are not building credits on your acting resume that agents will start to take seriously. If you have not trained with RECOGNIZABLE commercial acting teachers, your commercial agent will have a hard time selling you to casting directors and likely you won't even get in the audition room. If you are not training with well known and respected acting teachers, theatrical talent agents will never take you seriously. If you don't have TV credits, you MUST have training credits. Your resume MUST have professional training with several recognizable and respected acting teachers if you want Casting Directors to even look in your direction.

Do these 8 things in your first 1-3 years and you will be miles ahead of other actors who are "winging it" without guidance or direction from a reputable Talent Manager.

35 LA Photographers that Talent Agencies Recommend

Every Talent Agency has a list of reputable photographers they recommend to their clients. As a Manager I get tons of them so I will share a few of them with you. It is important to remember a couple of things. Every photographer works in their own way. They have their own style of shooting, favorite locations, lighting and backgrounds. What works for one actor with a photographer may not work for you. So interview several photographers until you find one you feel comfortable with. You need to be comfortable with the photographer so you can be relaxed during the session, be yourself and get great images.

Make sure you get the whole session on a DISK if that is important to you. You have to ask each photographer if they do that because some photographers do not. They will take 300 pictures and only give you 3 8x10's asking you to buy additional shots. I hate that. If I pay $375 for 3 looks and a photographer takes 300 shots, I want all 300 of them on a disk so I can use them anytime I want for multiple reasons: websites, marketing, pr, online casting profiles etc. I also want to be able to try others from the session if the ones I am using are not working. Most photographers will give you a disk or link to a website with your images, but ask, don't assume. The picture I am using for my blog was taken by one of my favorite photographers; Michael Helms (www.Michaelhelms.com) My second favorite is Stephanie Girard (www.stephgirardheadshots). Her images are amazing! Check out both of their websites and see which one you like best!

The second thing to remember is that headshots are not supposed to be "pretty" pictures. They are supposed to be shots of you that show Casting Directors your type and the type of roles they can cast you for. If you are the shy, quiet type your pictures should reflect that. If you are the outgoing, happy type your pictures should reflect that. If you are the angry or sarcastic type your pictures should reflect that too. And your pictures should look like you. No Casting Director wants to see a picture they like for a role, call you in to audition you and see someone who looks nothing like the photo walk in the door. That is a sure way to piss off a Casting Director and keep them from calling you in the future. This is avoidable so don't do it.

Lastly, because most Casting Directors use online casting systems today, they only see a thumbnail of your picture. It has to "pop" or get their attention right off the bat. CD's use a numbering system. The numbers 1-5 are under every picture. If they really want to see you they type a #1 under your picture. If they maybe want to see you they type a #3. If they don't want to see you they type #5. Then they tell the computer to schedule all the ones at 5 minutes intervals so they can get actors in and out for auditions. Your picture has about 2 seconds to "pop."

If the pictures you start out using are not getting you called in for auditions, your photos may not be "popping" or standing out from the others they are looking at so get rid of them and try new ones. Don't be married to them. I know they are expensive, but headshots are really disposable and only useful if they are getting you auditions. If you are stubborn about this, you will miss a lot of opportunities. So go shoot again, try different photographers until you get pictures that "pop." Don't go for the cheapest you can find because you get what you pay for. Most good photographers charge $250-$450 per session and kids are less. Expect to pay this and avoid cheap deals. It will likely be a waste of your money and you will end up paying the higher rates anyway. Note: If you change your look by cutting or dying you hair you will need new pictures.
